Income, deprivation, and social exclusion: toward a comprehensive poverty measurement in Hong Kong

Multidimensional measurements have become the preferred means to determine levels of poverty in research and policy practice because unidimensional cannot capture full picture poverty. This study combines income, deprivation, social exclusion measures proposes a comprehensive measurement within multidimensional framework. Using data from representative survey Hong Kong, we applied an affluent Asian society. We used Poisson-based framework analyse threshold Alkire Foster index (MPI). According measurement, Kong’s rate was 6.1%, MPI 0.047. Social contributed most poverty, individuals who differed typical profile had distinct disadvantages all three dimensions Multivariate regression analysis further revealed that were immigrants, aged 65 or over, low education poor health, received assistance more likely be comprehensively poor. Through revealing nuanced needs population, sheds new light on provides novel implications for alleviation.
